California Window Tint Laws: What You Need to Know
Before choosing your tint shade, it’s important to understand California’s window tinting regulations. The state measures tint darkness by Visible Light Transmission (VLT), the percentage of light allowed to pass through the film. Here’s what the law requires:
- Front windshield: 70% VLT (non-reflective tint allowed on the top 4 inches)
- Front side windows: 70% VLT minimum
- Rear and back side windows: Any darkness level is permitted
We’ll help you choose a setup that maximizes your protection and privacy while keeping you fully legal. For a deeper breakdown of your options, check out our guide: How dark should I go?

When Is It Time to Replace Your Window Tint?
If your current tint is fading to purple, peeling at the edges, or bubbling across the glass, it’s time for a replacement. Older, low-quality tint films break down under California’s intense sun faster than you’d expect. Learn the signs you need to replace your tint and upgrade to a film that’s built to last.
We handle full tint removal and replacement at our Thousand Oaks shop, stripping the old film cleanly and applying fresh XPEL ceramic tint so your windows look and perform like new.

Frequently Asked Questions
HOW ARE CAR WINDOW TINTS INSTALLED?
The film is applied to the inside of your car window. Our installation process begins by thoroughly cleaning the glass to remove dust, smudges, and dirt. We’ll then lay the film on the outside of the car’s window and cut out a piece of tint. The film is then trimmed to precisely fit your car’s unique shape. Our specialists will then remove the release liner and apply an application solution to the film’s adhesive, as well as to your window. The film is then placed on the inside of the window.
IS TINTING YOUR CAR WINDOWS WORTH IT?
Absolutely! In addition to blocking out 99% of harmful UV rays, automotive window tints can boost your privacy and protection. It can also keep your car’s interior from fading and enhances your comfort by reducing excess cabin heat.
WHAT ARE THE WINDOW TINTING LAWS IN CALIFORNIA?
California law requires a minimum of 70% VLT on your front windshield and front side windows. There are no restrictions on how dark you can make the rear and back windows. We’ll help you pick the right combination so your vehicle is protected, private, and legal.
CAN I ROLL MY WINDOWS DOWN AFTER THEY’RE TINTED?
Yes, but we recommend keeping your windows up for two to four days after installation. This allows the adhesive to fully cure and prevents the edges from peeling.
HOW LONG DOES WINDOW TINTING TAKE?
Most full-vehicle tint jobs take one to two hours for a standard sedan. If you’re only tinting the two front side windows, expect about 30 to 40 minutes. Larger SUVs and trucks may take slightly longer. We’ll give you a time estimate when you book your appointment.
IS CERAMIC WINDOW TINT WORTH THE INVESTMENT?
Absolutely. Ceramic tint like XPEL PRIME XR PLUS blocks over 99% of UV rays, significantly reduces interior heat, and won’t interfere with your electronics. Compared to cheaper dyed films that fade and bubble within a few years, ceramic tint holds up under California’s sun and keeps your interior looking new for much longer.
DO YOU OFFER WINDOW TINT REMOVAL?
Yes. If your existing tint is old, damaged, or bubbling, we offer professional removal and replacement. We’ll strip the old film cleanly and apply fresh XPEL ceramic tint for a like-new result.
DO YOU TINT TESLAS AND OTHER ELECTRIC VEHICLES?
Yes. We regularly work on Teslas, Rivians, Lucids, and all EV models. Our XPEL DAP software has precision patterns for virtually every vehicle on the road, including the latest electric models, so you get a perfect fit every time.
