Tesla CyberTruck vs Rivian R1T: Which is the Bigger, Better EV?

The electric vehicle (EV) market has burst to life in recent years with innovative vehicles from both well-established manufacturers and startups. However, the two dominant contenders in the EV arena are Tesla and Rivian.

But while Tesla has been developing electric vehicles for almost 20 years, Rivian is the new kid on the block. In fact, though the startup was founded in 2009, it has yet to release an actual vehicle.

Both companies have made a name for themselves in the electric pickup truck sector. But how does Tesla’s futuristic Cybertruck stack up against Rivian’s riveting R1T?

The auto experts at American Wrap Company are here to weigh in.

Design

As far as aesthetics go, the Cybertruck’s polarizing design isn’t for everybody. With an angular shape and sharp creases, this vehicle looks more like a tank than a truck. Tesla prides itself on creating distinct vehicles, and there’s no mistaking the Cybertruck for anything else on the market. However, while the cargo area and 6.5-foot bed are fairly functional, Tesla’s truck is more suited for an art exhibit than a job site.

On the other hand, Rivian’s conventionally handsome R1T sports a traditional crew cab/cargo box profile you’re likely to see on many other pickups. The truck’s rounded edges offer a contemporary design. Finishing touches such as skid plates and tow hooks emphasis the off-roading capabilities of this vehicle.

Interior

The Cybertruck has four doors and interior seating for six. Like all other Tesla models, the Cybertruck doesn’t have a switchgear. In lieu of a traditional steering wheel, the truck has an aircraft-inspired yoke. The dash is dominated by a 17-inch portrait touchscreen that allows a driver to easily access all of the vehicle systems.

The five-passenger R1T comes in two trim levels, including the base Explore and premium Adventure. Inside both are two touchscreens on the dashboard. The Explorer trim boasts wood accents and a Meridian sound system. There will also be a removable roof option on the Adventure arriving sometime next year.

Capability

Tesla’s truck has a towing capacity of up to 14,000 pounds and a maximum payload of 3,500 pounds. Rivian promises that the R1T will be able to tow 11,000+ pounds and will have a maximum payload of 1,760 pounds.

Performance

The Cybertruck will be available in three different configurations, with the base model offering 250 miles worth of range and 0 to 60 mph acceleration in 6.5 seconds. The top-tier model will have a range of 500 miles and can go from 0 to 60 in 2.9 seconds.

Rivian’s first R1T models promise a range of 300+ miles, 900 lb-ft of torque, and 800 horsepower. The truck can reach speeds of 60 mph in just three swift seconds. Moreover, the pickup’s 14-inch ground clearance allows it to be driven through three feet of water.

Additional Considerations

Tesla has a vast network of supercharging stations, while Rivian doesn’t have its own charging network. However, you can charge your R1T at an Electrify America station.

The Cybertruck has a starting price of $39,900 for its single-motor model, while the R1T’s base Explorer package is $67,500.

Final Thoughts

Both of these trucks have their benefits and drawbacks. While the Cybertruck is more affordable and offers more capabilities, the R1T has a more traditional design and off-roading capabilities.
