Who is Rivian Automotive?

Electric vehicles (EVs) are quickly becoming the new darlings of the automotive industry worldwide. From Chevy and Ford producing all-electric pickups to President Biden’s ambitious goal of 50% EV sale shares in the U.S. by 2030, the electric revolution has arrived and is here to stay.

A privately-held company based in Irvine, California, Rivian is the producer of premium electric SUVs and pickup trucks that has yet to still sell an actual vehicle.

You heard us correctly! While the company is backed by giants such as Ford and Amazon, Rivian is the largest American company with no sales.

 

Who is Rivian?

The EV manufacturing company was founded in 2009 by R.J. Scaringe. While earning his doctorate at MIT, Scaringe worked alongside top engineers. A vintage car lover since his youth, Scaringe dreamed of founding his own car company at just 18. An avid mountain biker and outdoorsman, Scaringe was passionate about building vehicles that could go off-roading.

The brand is acclaimed for its two electric vehicles, including the R1T and the R1S.

The R1T is an electric pickup truck with an estimated range of 314 miles that can be driven both on and off road. It features a quad-motor powertrain, an 11,000-pound towing capacity, and can go from zero to 60 mph in under three seconds.

Rivian’s other well-known EV is the R1S. An electric SUV boasting 316 miles worth of range, a towing capacity of 7,700 pounds, and plenty of tech, the R1S is the perfect family-friendly electric vehicle.

Both the R1T and the R1S are built on Rivian’s “skateboard platform,” which offers the company more flexibility when building different types of EVs in the future.

Rivian is also in the process of building electric fleet vehicles. Amazon already has plans to order 100,000 of the electric vans from the company.
