Does Ceramic Coating Prevent Scratches? What You Need to Know

Does your close friend have a car that seems to be in mint condition year-round? Have you ever wondered how they keep their vehicle looking so flawless and void of all scuffs, scratches, and swirl marks?

Your buddy’s secret might just be ceramic coating. This transparent liquid polymer is hand-applied to your car’s surface. It seamlessly bonds with your car’s factory paint down to a molecular level, creating an invisible layer of protection from daily-driving damages.

But can ceramic coating do the same for your car? The experts at American Wrap Company are here to tell you more.

Does Ceramic Coating Prevent Scratches?

Unfortunately, ceramic coating does NOT prevent scratches in your vehicle’s paint. It also does not protect your car’s surfaces from rock chips. That’s because ceramic coating has a 9h hardness or how it stands up to the hardness of a pencil.

To efficiently protect your car’s paint from scratches, we recommend getting paint protection film, and then a layer of ceramic coating installed on top of the PPF. That’s what your friend probably did to keep their car looking immaculate.

If your ceramic coating does get scratched, it can be buffed out with the right tools and a good amount of patience.

Will Ceramic Coating Fill in Scratches?

If your beloved car already has some battle scars, applying ceramic coating will NOT entirely hide those scratches and scuff marks. While it does have some minor filling capabilities, ceramic coating will not be able to hide your car’s imperfections.

To get the best results possible, we recommend having all scrapes and scratches filled in before applying ceramic coating. If you don’t do this, the ceramic coating will basically seal in your car’s flaws. And with most coatings lasting for up to five years, you’ll have to see those unsightly scrapes every day.

Does Ceramic Coating Remove Scratches?

Many drivers might assume that ceramic coating is a quick and easy fix to remove scratches in their car’s paint. While ceramic coating’s unique properties allow it to seep into scratches, it will NOT remove pre-existing cosmetic damages. That’s because the ceramic coating’s quartz particles are microscopic. While they will attach when applied to a scratch, they won’t bond to the car itself. However, the paint correction/ preparation needed before applying ceramic coating, can remove surface scratches and get the vehicles paint to a much more desired look before applying the ceramic.

Will Ceramic Pro Coating Protect My Car from Door Dings or Scratches?

As we mentioned earlier, ceramic coating will NOT protect your car’s paint from scratches. While it’s “scratch resistant,” ceramic coating is hardly scratch-proof.

The same can be said for door dings. Ceramic coating will NOT protect your car from that rogue shopping cart in the grocery store parking lot.

What Are the Benefits of Ceramic Coating?

While ceramic coating does not prevent scratches or door dings, it does come with its own set of benefits, including:

  • Repels road salt
  • Protects your car from UV rays and prevents fading
  • Drastically reduces your car’s risk of corrosion from acid rain, bird droppings, and bug splatter
  • The hydrophobic, or water repellant, properties make your car easier to clean

Preventing Paint Scratches

Ceramic coating might not protect your car from scratches, but you can! Here are some tips for preventing surface scratches in your car’s paint.

  • Wash off any dirt and debris immediately by spraying your car with a hose before you scrub it
  • When washing your car, use the two-bucket technique, including a bucket for clean, soapy water and another one for rinsing
  • Always use high-quality car cleaning products, including a microfiber cloth
  • Invest in paint protection film
